The Least Talked-About Aspect of Rolling

Posted by Ninja on March 4, 2009

What is the least talked-about part submission grappling and BJJ? Sweeps? Passes? Positional control? If you answered yes to any of those, you are completely wrong. The least talked-about aspect of BJJ and grappling is also the act most practiced on the mats on any given night…. tapping out!

The Most Common Methods of Tapping Out

  • The Pre-Tap - the person who does this must have faster reaction time than the man slapping on the submission, because you need to taps before the submission is sinched in all the way.

  • The Verbal Tap - Just because you don’t want to physically tap doesn’t mean you can’t stop the match be saying something out loud. This can be done in a variety of ways, such as: “tap” “you got it” or “okay, okay!”

  • The Machine Gun Tap - A more excited version of verbal tapout, except done in rapid, machine-gun-like succesion. e.g. “tap, tap, tap, tap…!”

  • The Accuser Tap - This usually comes from the taped-up, always-injured guy as we’ve seen on BJJ Stereotypes. Tap a little late and angry, claiming that your opponent tried to hurt you. Poor guy. Always the victim, always getting hurt, never his fault.

  • The Coach’s Tap - Rather than just let the “less experienced” opponent tap you, this is the time when you to stop him (on the brink of a submission) to teach him the finer points of grappling. Don’t be shy, show him what he’s doing wrong!

  • The Empty Gas Tank Tap - This happens most often during the moments immediately after you’ve realized you’ve got nothing left and subconsciously give your opponent the submission. Or in even more dire situations, when the opponent gets knee-on-belly or a based-out-mount, tapping can be a reflex response.

  • The Juicer Tap aka Non-Tap - Only the truly stubborn or roided-out can pull this off. How you ask? Don’t tap until after the third crackle of your elbow.

Do you know of any more types of taps? Which type are you?
